The Musical Ride is performed by a full troop of 32 riders and horses. It consists of a variety of intricate figures and movements demanding utmost control, timing and coordination. Months of training and practice make horse and rider a synchronized, skillful unit.
The origin of the Musical Ride maneuvers can be found in traditional cavalry-drill movements. Dress and equipment are also deeply rooted in cavalry and Force tradition. The original North West Mounted Police uniform has undergone some changes over the years but the Scarlet Tunic has been with the RCMP since its beginning. Ride members wear modern Review Order -Stetson, Scarlet Tunic, Sam Browne belt, breeches, Strathcona riding boots and spurs. Each rider carries a lance, a cavalry weapon that dates back to earliest times, topped with a red and white pennon and chrome-plated steel point.
